A look at top free agents that can bolster DStv Prem teams
The DStv Premiership transfer window is buzzing, and a number of top free agents are still on the hunt for new clubs. This presents a great opportunity for teams looking to bolster their squads.
Experienced campaigners like Itumeleng Khune and Kermit Erasmus are part of the stars that are available for any team. With the right signings, the unattached players could be the difference for many teams.
FARPost looks at the top DStv Premiership free agents.
KERMIT ERASMUS
The 33-year-old is without a team after parting ways with Soweto giants Orlando Pirates. The former Bafana Bafana star struggled for game time at the club due to injury setbacks and stiff competition in the striking position.
Pirates had other quality strikers like Zakhale Lepasa, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa, who all play for Bafana. Last season, Erasmus only made 11 appearances and scored one goal.
ITUMELENG KHUNE
The former Bafana Bafana international’s future has been a talking point for a long time after his Kaizer Chiefs contract expired on 30 June.
He hasn’t been offered a non-playing contract and was left out of the delegation that travelled to Turkey for pre-season. In the 2023/24 campaign, Khune made six appearances in all competitions, conceded six goals, and kept one clean sheet. However, Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung revealed that they are in talks with Khune for a deal.
GEORGE MALULEKA
The midfielder is unattached after parting ways with AmaZulu FC. The 35-year-old had limited playing time last season, with the KZN-based side only making 17 appearances in all competitions.
Maluleka is well-travelled, having previously played for teams like Ajax Cape Town [now called Cape Town Spurs], SuperSport United, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
VINCENT PULE
Pule’s exit from Orlando Pirates came as a surprise, as he still had a year remaining in his contract. The attacking midfielder struggled for some minutes last season and didn’t make a great impact on the team.
The 32-year-old had injury problems, which saw him only make 11 appearances and grab an assist.
RICHARD OFORI
The Ghanaian goalie, Ofori, is a free agent after being released by Orlando Pirates. He will be valuable to the team he joins, as he boasts experience and has represented the Black Stars of Ghana in major tournaments like the AFCON.
At Pirates, he had injury problems and competition from Sipho Chaine and Melusi Buthelezi. The 30-year-old only made three appearances last season. He let in two goals and kept one clean sheet.
SIBUSISO VILAKAZI
‘Villa’ is another star currently looking for a new home after his contract with Sekhukhune United expired. The experienced midfielder joined the club in the middle of the 2022/23 season and became one of the key players.
Last campaign, he struggled for game time, only making 13 appearances in all competitions. A few days back, FARPost reported that Vilakazi is training with SuperSport United in an attempt to get a new deal.
KEAGAN DOLLY
The former Montpellier midfielder is also searching for a team after parting ways with Kaizer Chiefs. Dolly’s stay at the club was troubled by injuries, which kept him on the sidelines a lot.
The 31-year-old only made eight appearances last campaign and registered an assist. Dolly has been linked with a move to SuperSport United.
BONGANI ZUNGU
The midfielder is looking for a new home after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns. Zungu is experienced, having played abroad for French Ligue 1 side Amiens, Scottish Premiership giants Glasgow Rangers FC, and Bafana Bafana.
In the 2023/24 season, he was one of the key players for Masandawana, making 30 appearances in all competitions, playing different roles in the midfield and at the back.
GASTON SIRINO
Sirino cut ties with the reigning DStv Premiership champions Sundowns after his contract came to an end.
Last season, the Uruguay international had his fair chance of games. The 33-year-old played 24 games and scored five goals and two assists.
BRIAN ONYANGO
The Kenyan defender is looking for a new challenge after Sundowns opted not to renew his contract. While at the club, the 29-year-old faced injuries and stiff competition from Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, and Mosa Lebusa.
In the 2023/24 season, Onyango played nine matches in all competitions. The centre-back is also linked with a move to SuperSport United.
LUVUYO MEMELA
Talented attacker Luvuyo Memela is amongst the top free agents. The 36-year-old parted ways with Chippa United when his deal expired.
He lasted one season with the Chilli Boys, making 16 appearances in all competitions and grabbing four assists.
SURPRISE RALANI
The 36-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Cape Town Spurs in April, and the reasons behind his departure are still unknown. Ralani brings a lot of experience having played abroad.
With CT Spurs, he only made 14 appearances in all competitions and registered an assist.
