Orlando Pirates striker Katlego Cwinyane resurfaces at Orbit College
Katlego Cwinyane, a product of the Orlando Pirates youth system and a striker who has spent several seasons on loan at various clubs, has now resurfaced at Orbit College.
The 25-year-old spent the previous season on loan at Hungry Lions, competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, South Africa’s second-tier football league. During his time there, he managed to net five goals in 23 appearances, contributing to the team’s 8th-place finish.
Prior to his stint at Hungry Lions, Cwinyane had a successful loan spell at Sekhukhune United, during their time in the second tier. He scored six goals during their campaign, helping the team achieve automatic promotion to the top-tier league.
This week, Cwinyane started training with Orbit College as the club continues to engage Pirates. They are considering whether to acquire him on loan or a permanent transfer.
COULD KATLEGO CWINYANE SOLVE ORBIT’S SCORING WOES?
Orbit finished the season in ninth place having started off well. They struggled for goals upfront and will be hoping Cwinyane chips in with several strikes. In fact, the North West outfit only managed 30 goals in 30 games.
Mbulelo Wagaba was their top scorer with eight goals while Siyabulela Mabele and Thuso Moleleki both contributed six goals. The 24-year-old midfielder, Moleleki, has since earned a move to Orlando Pirates, thanks to his fine performances for Orbit.
Cwinyane’s journey highlights the challenges young players often face in securing a consistent place in top-tier squads. Nevertheless, his goal-scoring record in the second division demonstrates his potential and suggests that he could still have a future in professional football.
Last season, Orbit had another Pirates player on loan. Goalkeeper Sphamandla Gumede was signed from Dondol Stars. They loaned him out to Orbit for the past season. With Siyabonga Mpontshane released by the Buccaneers, Gumede could return to the club for the upcoming season.
