Romain Folz backs ex-AmaZulu, Chippa star Veluyeke Zulu for defensive reinforcement

Ex-AmaZulu defender Veluyeke Zulu has received a glowing endorsement from his former coach, Romain Folz.

The French tactician is particularly impressed with Zulu’s unique defensive qualities, which he believes can significantly strengthen any club’s defence.

The 29-year-old is a free agent after his contract with AmaZulu expired at the end of the season, and several clubs are monitoring his situation. Folz worked with the 1.90-meter-tall defender during his time as the coach of AmaZulu last season.

The Ulundi-born defender arrived at the club at the start of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season. He joined the Durban side from Chippa United, where he spent a season.

Since his breakthrough to the DStv Premiership, he has featured in 52 matches across all competitions. Eight of those outings came under Folz.

During his time at both Richards Bay FC and Chippa United, his eye-catching performances sparked transfer rumours linking him with a move to the Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs.

WHAT ROMAIN FOLZ SAID ABOUT VELUYEKE ZULU

“He has an excellent attitude, is honest and committed, and takes good care of himself as well,” Folz remarked, highlighting Veluyeke Zulu’s professionalism. “He is very good in the air and capable of commanding a defence, as he can be positively vocal when needed.”

Romain Folz, who also coached Marumo Gallants, believes that with consistent playing time, Zulu’s confidence will grow, leading to further improvement and a higher level of performance. “He is very useful on set pieces as well, which is always a plus. For most clubs, he can be a very good addition. He’s a professional.”

Veluyeke Zulu’s availability as a free agent, coupled with Folz’s endorsement, is likely to attract interest from clubs seeking to bolster their defensive options.
