SA Belgian-based coach offers advice for Shandre Campbell to thrive in Europe

South African coach Masilo Modubi, based in Belgium, has shared his thoughts on what it will take for teen sensation Shandre Campbell to succeed in Club Brugge’s colours.

Campbell recently signed a deal with Belgian giants Club Brugge until 2027 and will play for their academy side, NXT, in the Challenger Pro League, Belgium’s second division.

The 18-year-old had a successful first season in the SA elite league for SuperSport United. Due to his impressive performance for the club, he was also a nominee for DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season.

Modubi has commended Campbell’s move, especially at his age. The 39-year-old has been based in Belgium since 2003, when he joined Westerlo.

COACH MASILO MODUBI SAYS Shandre Campbell moved to EUROPE AT THE RIGHT AGE

“It’s a good move because he came to Belgium at the right age,” Modubi told FARPost. “At this age in Europe, you can learn and adjust to a lot of things, mostly the weather, the pace and that’s important. At that age, it’s easier to adapt and to learn.

“I always say Belgium is a state park for players. If you look around the world, how many players have started in Belgium and are now on top of the world in the big leagues,” he said.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR SHANDRE CAMPBELL TO SUCCEED IN BELGIUM?

“The passion, why you started playing football. The reason for playing football. What drives him and hard work. Being open to learning and being mentally strong, especially knowing that you are away from home. There are a lot of factors that play in.

“Being fit and, most importantly, it’s the desire. Not being too relaxed and continuing to be consistent and working hard. Even when things go well, be hungry and want more and more,” added Modubi.

“That’s mostly our downfall as African players. We get to Europe and do well. We get that small achievement, and we start to relax, thinking we are there. So I think for him it will be important to have that Cristiano Ronaldo mentality, to work hard.

“Even when you achieve, keep working. Don’t listen to the praises outside l. But just keep working and I think that’s the most important thing for a football player. Especially for a young player.”
