Sundowns leaves midfielder out of the pre-season tour

Mamelodi Sundowns have left midfielder Luvuyo Phewa out of the pre-season tour as they prepare for the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

Sundowns touched down in Austria on Monday morning to prepare for what promises to be an exciting campaign in the Premiership.

The Brazilians have been one the busiest teams in the current transfer window which saw them shockingly part ways with head coach Rulani Mokwena.

Mokwena parted company with Downs on ‘mutual consent’ with three years left before the expiry of his contract.

The Soweto-born tactician has already secured a coaching gig with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca while Sundowns brought back Steve Komphela as a senior coach to assist Manqoba Mngqithi.

Meanwhile, Sundowns have also released Bongani Zungu, Brian Onyango, Thabiso Kutumela, Gaston Sirino and Promise Mkhuma, as reported by FARPost.

PHEWA’S FUTURE HANGS IN THE BALANCE FOLLOWING PRE-SEASON TOUR SNUB

With the Tshwane giants seemingly taking a new direction, this publication has established that Luvuyo Phewa is not part of the pre-season tour which leaves his future hanging in the balance.

Phewa spent the last two seasons on loan at Cape Town Spurs, however, indications are that he’s not on the plans of Sundowns’ technical team.

The attacking midfielder signed with Masandawana in 2020 from the then second-tier side Real Kings and he’s yet kick a ball for the club. Between 2020 and 2022, Phewa had loan spells with AmaTuks and Chippa United.

During his time at Spurs last season, the 24-year attacker featured in 19 appearances across all competitions. He scored one goal and provided three assists which was not enough to help the Urban Warriors survive relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

“Luvuyo Phewa is not part the Mamelodi Sundowns team that left South Africa for pre-season in Austria. At the moment, there is no official word on what is going to happen with Phewa but the fact that he is not part of the pre-season activities, it could mean, he’s not part of the plans at Downs.” a source said.

In aaddition, the Brazilians will face SV Sandhausen, FC Dynamo Kyiv, Cardiff City FC, Al Arabi SC, and Al Hilal SC during their tour.
