Why Stellenbosch CEO Benadie believes Sanele Barns is a gamechanger

Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has explained why he’s confident new signing Sanele Barns will make an impact at the club in the new season.

The 2023/24 Carling Knockout Cup champions officially announced Barns as their latest signing on Monday, 15 July.

Barns becomes the club’s third signing as the Western Town outfit has already welcomed attacker Lehlohonolo Mojela from TS Galaxy and former Kaizer Chiefs development player Omega Mdaka.

The 27-year-old penned a deal with Stellies after parting ways with KZN side Richards Bay FC, who survived relegation from the DStv Premiership through the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs.

Barns was one of the key players in the Richards Bay squad after making 35 appearances in all competitions. He managed to find the back of the net six times and grabbed seven assists.

For his impressive performances, he was nominated for the 2023/24 Midfielder of the Season award.

Benadie believes Barns will be a great addition for the team. The club will be participating in the inter-club CAF tournament for the first time in their history; the CAF Confederation Cup.

Stellies had a great run last season, becoming one of the difficult teams to beat. They finished third on the log standings and they clinched the Carling Knockout Cup.

“We are delighted to welcome Sanele to the Club,” said Benadie in a statement.

“He was one of the standout performers in the league last season. We are excited to add a player of his calibre and experience to our squad, especially as we embark on our first-ever campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.

“We are looking forward to him making a big impact at the Club and have no doubt that he will contribute massively towards our continued success.”

The talented right winger will face an uphill task to become a regular player for the Cape Winelands side. In that position, the Maroons have other players like Devin Titus and Antonio Van Wyk. The duo have been impressive each time they are on the field of play.
