AmaTuks lock down defensive star Tshepiso Mahlangu with new contract
Pretoria University [AmaTuks] have secured the services of their defensive stalwart, Tshepiso Mahlangu, with a new contract that includes a one-year extension option.
The 26-year-old versatile defender has been instrumental in the team’s performance in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, showcasing his skills in a remarkable 33 games out of 37 matches during the 2023/24 season.
Mahlangu’s defensive prowess has been evident in his contribution to AmaTuks’ impressive record of 14 clean sheets in the matches he featured in.
The former North West University prodigy, who participated in all four PSL Promotional/Relegation Play-off games and the Nedbank Cup, signed a one-year deal.
Renowned for his aerial dominance, Mahlangu excels in winning headers and displays exceptional ball control, passing ability and confidence in his footwork.
As a centre-back who can seamlessly transition into the right-back position, he is adept at delivering short and long passes, making him a valuable asset in defensive and offensive plays for head coach Tlisane Motloung.
His leadership qualities were on full display as he captained the South African Universities National Team, playing a pivotal role in their triumphant tournament victory. His experience and composure on the field make him an influential figure in Motloung’s squad.
TSHEPISO MAHLANGU AIMING TO MAINTAIN COMPETITIVE EDGE
The contract extension is a testament to Mahlangu’s consistent performance and AmaTuks’s trust in his abilities. With his continued presence in the team’s defensive line, AmaTuks is well-positioned to maintain their competitive edge in the upcoming season.
The player’s representative, Themba Shabalala, confirmed the development. “This contract renewal reflects the player’s outstanding performance and dedication,” Shabalala told FARPost. “We’re thrilled to continue our journey together, as our goals for the future perfectly match the club’s ambitions. The player is eager to compete in the DStv Premiership, and so are we. With unwavering focus, he will strive to make that dream a reality for both himself and the club.”
Formerly in the top-flight, The Students finished second last season, 12 points adrift of second-tier league winners Magesi FC. Once again, they failed to win promotion via the playoffs.
AmaTuks are aiming for promotion to the DStv Premiership once more this coming season. Keeping one of their top players appears to be a crucial step if they want to remain competitive in the upcoming season.
