Former Young Africans striker Sarpong trains with SuperSport United

Former Young Africans striker Michael Sarpong was spotted training with SuperSport United on Tuesday alongside his former Sekhukhune United teammate Sibusiso Vilakazi.

The two were affected by sweeping changes at Babina Noko that saw several players released at the end of the season. The Ghanaian had joined Babina Noko on a one-year deal.

However, his time at Sekhukhune was hampered by limited game time due to visa issues, which led to his departure at the end of last season.

Vilakazi, on the other hand, has been training with SuperSport since the start of pre-season. He is looking to reunite with his former Bidvest Wits coach, Gavin Hunt.

The striker, on the other hand, reportedly started training with Matsatsantsa on Monday. SuperSport United had Etiosa Ighodaro on loan from Sundowns last season, but he is on the verge of moving to AmaZulu FC on loan.

WHY HUNT COULD BE CONSIDERING MICHAEL SARPONG

The Tshwane side is eager to replace Ighodaro ahead of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership. Hunt recognises the Ghanaian striker’s aerial prowess, hold-up play, and finishing ability. These attributes could make Sarpong a valuable asset for SuperSport, providing a much-needed attacking threat.

“Sarpong is a striker that can fit into most teams,” said a source close to the club. “The feeling is that he wasn’t in a good space at Sekhukhune, but he has the potential to be a top performer if given the right support.

“He’s strong in the air, can hold the ball up, and is a clinical finisher. He needs wingers who can provide him with quality service.”

At 28 years old, Sarpong is entering his prime and will be eager to prove his worth in the SA top-flight. If he can secure a contract with SuperSport United, it could mark a turning point in his career. This could also be a chance to rediscover the form that made him a sought-after player in Tanzania.
