Luvuyo Phewa’s AmaZulu adventure begins with loan move

Luvuyo Phewa begins his AmaZulu FC adventure after completing his one-year loan deal from Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 24-year-old Phewa, who impressed during his loan spell at Cape Town Spurs last season, had attracted interest from several clubs, including Sekhukhune United and the Urban Warriors, who were keen on a permanent deal.

Phewa was a regular starter for CT Spurs until a medical issue sidelined him towards the end of the season. His standout performances prompted Sundowns to offer him a lengthy contract, demonstrating their long-term commitment to the talented midfielder.

While Sundowns’ sporting director, Flemming Berg, is known to be a big admirer of Phewa, the club has decided to loan him out to AmaZulu for the upcoming 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

LUVUYO PHEWA LOAN DEAL FINALISED

The loan deal was finalised after Phewa successfully completed his medical with AmaZulu on Monday. He was notably absent from Sundowns’ pre-season trip to Austria due to medical reasons.

AmaZulu’s acquisition of Phewa is a major coup for the club, as they beat out competition from other suitors to secure his signature. Phewa’s addition will bolster their midfield and provide them with a dynamic and creative presence in the centre of the park.

In addition to Phewa, AmaZulu are also on the verge of signing Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro on loan.
The 23-year-old recently returned to Sundowns after a season-long loan at SuperSport United but was not included in the squad that travelled to Austria for pre-season training.

The Nigerian striker has had previous loan spells at Chippa United and the University of Pretoria since joining Sundowns as a teenager. This double swoop from Sundowns would significantly strengthen AmaZulu’s attacking options for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Usuthu have been active in the transfer market, having already secured the signings of Guinea winger Boniface Haba, Sifiso Ngobeni and Senzo Ndlovu from Sinekani. The addition of Phewa and Ighodaro further highlights the club’s ambition to compete at the highest level in the DStv Premiership.

With a strengthened squad and a mix of experienced and young talent, AmaZulu will be hoping for a better season ahead. They missed out on a top-eight finish, only managing 11th place.
