Ntseki sends indirect warning to Chiefs new coach Nabi

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Molefi Ntseki has sent an indirect warning to the club’s new man Nasreddine Nabi ahead of the new season.

Ntseki took over the coaching reins at Amakhosi at the start of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season. The former Bafana Bafana mentor was in charge of 13 matches at Chiefs across all competitions. Ntseki guided the club to four wins, three draws and six defeats.

In Ntseki’s short spell, Chiefs were eliminated from the first round of the 2023 inaugural Carling Knockout Cup. They were also booted out of the semi-final of the MTN8.

The poor results prompted Chiefs’ fans to throw missiles at Ntseki, demanding that he resign. Chiefs eventually cut ties with the 54-year-old coach in October 2023 and Cavin Johnson took over on an interim basis.

Johnson was in charge for the remainder of the previous season. However, he also failed to produce results as the Glamour Boys finished 10th on the log standings.

Following a dismal finish to the 2023/24 season, the Soweto giants made drastic changes in the technical team by appointing Nasreddine Nabi as their head coach.

Nabi brought two assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Fernando Da Cruz with Ilyes Mzoughi and Safi Majdi serving as goalkeeper coach and conditioning coach, respectively.

WHAT DID MOLEFI NTSEKI SAY ABOUT KAIZER CHIEFS SUPPORTERS?

While the Chiefs faithful are optimistic about the new direction under the guidance of Nabi, Ntseki says something has to take a u-turn with how the supporters react when coaches are not winning.

“I don’t think the supporters were very impatient with me. What happened [missile throwing] was not happening for the first time,” Ntseki said on Metro FM. He had been asked about his relationship with Chiefs supporters.

“So I think something has to make a U-turn in terms of how things are happening at the club. If I’m saying the supporters were impatient with me, what about other coaches?

“Before I was appointed, the expectation towards the end of the season was for Chiefs to have a new coach. As the technical committee, we were looking for that coach [Nasreddine Nabi], and things did not work out for us.

“The club decided to appoint me. I think what needed to happen at that time was for the supporters to understand why the expected coach could not come to the club at that time.

“So when you look at my appointment from the word go, the supporters were not happy. Already there was a bit of frustration. And because of what they experienced over the years, they wanted someone they believe will bring success.

“What they want is players and the coach to win them trophies and the league. [That] is not going to happen overnight.”
