‘We won’t experience that bad spell again’: Mabhuti Khenyeza on Arrows

Golden Arrows assistant coach Mabhuti Khenyeza believes their struggles last season were a blessing in disguise for both the coaches and players.

Khenyeza was the man in charge when Abafana Bes’thende endured an 11-match losing streak last match.

Steve Komphela was brought in to address the situation in March. He made an immediate impact, guiding the Durban-based side to a 1-0 away win over Polokwane City FC in his first game at the helm.

However, he has since departed to rejoin Mamelodi Sundowns as a senior coach.

Speaking to the media during the KZN Premier’s Cup launch on Thursday, Khenyeza said they grasped lessons from the rough patch they suffered.

He expressed confidence that they wouldn’t experience the same struggles again this upcoming season.

“I don’t think we’ll experience the same situation again because that’s a lesson we learnt,” said Khenyeza.

“I think you will be…I don’t know if you don’t learn from past situations. From the management, technical team and the players, we learnt a lot from the previous season.

“And the patch that we went through of 11, 12 games without winning.

“And then the only way which we need to embrace that situation is by taking positives from it.

“It mustn’t just happen and pass like that. That was a part of our growth as coaches as well.

“Whenever you go to the game, you always have your shoulders up and ready to perform and compete without any fear.”

Arrows began the season strongly, emerging as a dark horse and even occupying second place in the DStv Premiership standings for a while.

After the bad form, the KZN outfit ended the last season in ninth place. They collected 38 points in 30 league matches.

With the KZN provincials teams set to battle in the KZN Premier’s Cup, Arrows have been drawn against AmaZulu FC in the quarter-final.

If they go through to the semi-final, they will face whoever wins between Royal AM and Milford FC.
