Mwape Musonda resurfaces at his former club

Former Premiership top goalscorer Mwape Musonda has resurfaced at Black Leopards, where he is also the team’s all-time top scorer.

The Zambian striker made his name at the club during his four-year stint between 2016 and 2020.

He arrived in the country in 2014 for a stint at Soweto giants Orlando Pirates. But he left to join Golden Arrows the following season, where he also couldn’t cement a regular position.

This prompted a move to Limpopo where he joined Black Leopards. He was the top goalscorer in the first division during the 2017/18 season while at the club. He went on to become the top scorer in the Premier League the next season after Leopards’ promotion.

Musonda netted 50 goals in 107 matches for Leopards making him their all-time top goal scorer. His form resulted in interest from the big clubs in Gauteng. But the Zambian international opted for a move to Saudi Arabia where he joined Hatta for one season before he moved back to South Africa and signed for now-defunct Moroka Swallows.

FARPost spotted the 33-year-old training with the Motsepe Foundation Championship side at their training grounds in Polokwane. It’s not yet clear if the striker will be rejoining the club ahead of the new season.

Head coach Maxwell Konadu is expected to finalise his squad for the new season in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, former Cape Town City goalkeeper Marc Anderson, the son of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Mark Anderson is also training with Leopards. Anderson Junior, who is also a goalkeeper, has been without a club since parting ways with Cape Town City. He last featured for the Cape Town City senior team during the 2020/21 season.
