Veteran defender Clayton Daniels eyes PSL return

Despite age not on his side, veteran defender Clayton Daniels is eyeing a return to the SA elite league ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Daniels has been a free agent since March 2023, after parting ways with Cape Town Spurs, who were relegated from the DStv Premiership. The last time he was in action was back in December 2023.

The 40-year-old’s exit came as a surprise as he was the captain of the team and key member in the squad. It is alleged he had a fallout with CT Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp.

Last campaign, the former Bafana Bafana international made 13 league appearances before his exit. However, he failed to help the Capetonians keep a single clean sheet as the team was struggling for form and consistency.

Daniels is well-travelled having played for other PSL teams like Mamelodi Sundowns, now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United and Maritzburg United.

“It’s difficult finding a team, I haven’t played football for like five months now,” said Daniels. “I couldn’t join another team because I was contracted to Cape Town Spurs.

“I’m still available, I’m a free agent. So if there is any club out there interested in my services. I will be glad to come and assist.

“I have been training on my own to keep fit, waiting for another opportunity again. I’m ready for a new challenge.

Daniels further highlighted that retirement is something he hasn’t considered. He insists he will continue with his playing career as long as his body permits.

“There is one thing I have always told myself. If I’m good enough, can still do the job, the body allows me to go then I will continue playing. People think this way, people think that way, but the hunger and desire is still there in me to keep on playing,” he added.
