Sekhukhune United decides against signing ex-Richards Bay captain

Sekhukhune United have decided against signing the ex-Richards Bay FC captain Katlego Maphathe for the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

Maphathe was on one-week trial at Sekhukhune as he was assessed by the technical team as a possible replacement for Nyiko Mobbie. A few days ago, Mobbie completed his permanent move from Mamelodi Sundowns to SuperSport United.

Before moving to SuperSport, the Bafana Bafana international was on a season-long loan at Sekhukhune from Sundowns.

His loan stint with Babina Noko last season was the third one in a row since the club gained promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship in 2021.

Mobbie was a key player for Sekhukhune after featuring in 35 matches across all competitions in the previous season.

Meanwhile, the Limpopo-based side are searching for a right-back to fill the void left by Nyiko Mobbie for the upcoming season.

SEKHUKHUNE UNITED WON’T BE SIGNING KATLEGO MAPHATHE

Sekhukhune United invited Maphathe for trials, however FARPost understands that the 31-year-old defender won’t be signed.

Maphathe has been a free agent after parting ways with Cape Town Spurs, who were relegated from SA’s top-flight in the 2023/24 campaign.

In his six months at CT Spurs, the Bloemfontein-born utility player featured in 13 appearances in all competitions and he was a regular starter under the guidance of Ernst Middendorp.

Before signing with CT Spurs, Maphathe was in the books of the KZN side Richards Bay FC where he spent seven seasons.

“Katlego Maphathe was training with Sekhukhune United in the past week with the hope of getting a contract but it looks like that’s not happening,” a source said.

“Maphathe has already left the Sekhukhune camp and he was not part of the team that played a friendly match against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday morning.”
