Mabhuti Khenyeza poised for return to head coach role at Golden Arrows

Steve Komphela’s exit has seemingly paved the way for Mabhuti Khenyeza’s return to the helm at Lamontville Golden Arrows next season.

Komphela ditched the KZN side to return to Mamelodi Sundowns as Senior Coach.

This move came after the Brazilians parted ways with their previous head coach Rulani Mokwena who has since taken over at Wydad Casablanca in Morocco.

Khenyeza, with the assistance of Musa Bilankulu, has been in charge of Arrows during the pre-season as the Durban-based club continues to prepare for the next campaign.

According to FARPost sources, the 42-year-old coach will be re-appointed as the head coach of Abafana Bes’thende.

Khenyeza previously held the position from September last year after co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi left the club to join Chippa United.

However, a string of 11 consecutive losses led to his demotion to assistant coach upon Steve Komphela’s arrival in March this year. During his 17-game spell as Arrows head coach, Khenyeza secured five wins, including a walkover victory, but also endured 11 defeats and a single draw.

WHAT KHENYEZA SAID WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE JOB

At the KZN Premier’s Cup launch, he was asked whether there had been any developments regarding the head coach position.

He responded: “I don’t know. At the moment, I’m the one in charge, just doing the job. I don’t know. I haven’t met with management yet. Maybe I still need to wait for their mandate.”

Khenyeza, confident in the lessons learned from last season’s struggles, believes they won’t experience a similar downturn this year.

“I don’t think we’ll experience the same situation again because that’s a lesson we learnt,” added Khenyeza.

“I think you will be…I don’t know if you don’t learn from past situations. From the management, technical team and the players, we learnt a lot from the previous season.

“And the patch that we went through of 11, 12 games without winning. And then the only way we need to embrace that situation is by taking positives from it.

“It mustn’t just happen and pass like that. That was a part of our growth as coaches as well.

“Whenever you go to the game, you always have your shoulders up and ready to perform and compete without any fear.”
