Betway announced as new PSL sponsor
The PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has confirmed betting company Betway as the new headline sponsor of the SA elite league ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Dr Khoza addressed the members of the media in a press conference on Wednesday, 24 July 2024 at the PSL headquarters in Parktown.
According to local reports, the DStv [MultiChoice group] pulled out as the headline sponsor of the PSL [known as DStv Premiership] for the upcoming campaign due to financial difficulties.
The contract between the PSL and DStv was set to come to an end in September 2025. Both parties signed a five-year contract back in September 2020 with DStv the headline sponsor of the SA top-flight.
This was after the ABSA Bank cut ties with the PSL following a 13-year marriage.
Since the DStv took over as the headline sponsor of the league, Mamelodi Sundowns are the only team that have managed to win the DStv Premiership title.
HOW LONG IS THE BETWAY DEAL WITH THE PSL?
The PSL chairman has confirmed that the new sponsorship with Betway is a three-year deal worth R900 million.
As a result, the league will now be known as the Betway Premiership moving forward.
“We now have the Betway Premiership as the sponsorship of the league. Thank you very much DStv as the Premiership sponsor,” said Dr Khoza.
However, Dr Khoza stated that the prize money for the league will be announced in due course when everything has been finalised.
“Watch the space. I can’t talk about that when the fixtures are not out,” said Dr Khoza when asked about the league’s prize money.
The 2024/25 Betway Premiership will commence on 3 August 2023. The fixtures are expected to be released this afternoon.
