One position Mamelodi Sundowns should reinforce ahead of next season

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Matthew Booth has highlighted a position he believes the PSL champions should strengthen ahead of the new season.

The Tshwane giants, known for their dominance in SA football in recent years, have added four new players to their squad for the upcoming season. Kobamelo Kodisang, Arthur de Oliveira Sales, Kegan Johannes, and Asekho Tiwani are the latest additions to the trophy-winning team.

Sundowns will be participating in many competitions in the upcoming season apart from the MTN8, Betway Premiership, Carling Knockout Cup and Nedbank Cup.

The Brazilians will embark on the continent in the CAF Champions League and try to defend their African Football League [AFL].

MATTHEW BOOTH SUGGESTS THAT SUNDOWNS SHOULD SIGN A CENTRE-BACK

The former Bafana Bafana international believes Sundowns should get a centre-back. His concern is in the team’s defending of set-pieces.

However, Sundowns have centre-backs who have been impressive each time they have been on the field of play. This includes Bafana international duo Mothobi Mvala and Grant Kekana, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Mosa Lebusa, Reshine De Reuck, and Devine Lunga.

“In my opinion, if there is something Mamelodi Sundowns must fix, it’s the ability to defend set pieces,” Booth told FARPost.

“When Brian Onyango or Abdelmounaim Boutouil were not playing, which was for a larger part of the season, they looked a little bit shaky at the back.

“So perhaps a centre-back with a good stature who can communicate and organise the defence, defend set-pieces is a good addition. He can play alongside Grant Kekana or Mothobi Mvala. That’s what is lacking; that’s the type of player I will be looking for.”

“But the squad is great. It’s well balanced, and it has all the ingredients for success in all the tournaments that they will be participating in.”
