Sibusiso Vilakazi and Brian Onyango await big decision at SuperSport

Sibusiso Vilakazi and Brian Onyango are awaiting a major decision on their futures at SuperSport United ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

Vilakazi and Onyango are free agents after parting ways with Sekhukhune United and Mamelodi Sundowns, respectively, at the end of last season.

The attacking midfielder, Vilakazi, struggled to break into the Sekhukhune line after featuring in just 13 appearances across all competitions without scoring a goal.

Vilakazi spent a season-and-half with Babina Noko after signing from TS Galaxy during the 2023 January transfer window.

Before his brief stint with Galaxy, Vilakazi was in the colours of Mamelodi Sundowns where he won a handful of trophies including the 2016 CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, Onyango was let go by the Brazilians as he was seemingly not in the plans of the club’s new technical team that is led by Manqoba Mngqithi.

The Kenyan international was starved for game-time in the previous season after playing just three matches in the league.

Sundowns preferred the centre-back pairing of Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala, who were crucial in helping the team win the inaugural 2023 African Football League [AFL] trophy and their seventh successive league title.

WHAT’S THE LATEST ON SIBUSISO VILAKAZI AND BRIAN ONYANGO?

While SuperSport have been beefing up their squad for the upcoming season, indications are the two experienced players may not be signed.

The pair has been assessed by the Tshwane-based outfit under the watchful eye of head coach Gavin Hunt.

“SuperSport United are still yet to make a decision on whether they going to sign Sibusiso Vilakazi and Brian Onyango ahead of the new Betway Premiership season,” a source told FARPost.

“Both players have been on trial with SuperSport since they are free agents but at the moment there’s no decision yet. But what raised questions is that Vila and Onyango were left out of the pre-season tour to Botswana and this could mean they might not be signed.

In addition, Matsatsantsa have already snapped up Nyiko Mobbie, Ricardo Goss, and Vincent Pule who left Orlando Pirates a few weeks ago.
