Why Chiefs goalie Bontle Molefe should consider a loan move
Former Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper William Shongwe has explained why he believes Bontle Molefe should consider a loan move away from the club ahead of the new season.
Despite being part of the Chiefs first team since 2019, Bontle Molefe is yet to make a senior appearance. The promising young goalkeeper faces stiff competition for the number one jersey at Amakhosi with Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma, and newly signed Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy.
As a result, Molefe has slipped to fourth-choice goalkeeper, limiting his chances of playing time this season.
The 21-year-old travelled with the team to Turkey for pre-season under the guidance of new coach Nasreddine Nabi and his technical staff. However, he was absent from the squad that suffered a 4-0 defeat to Young Africans in the Toyota Cup.
According to FARPost sources, the club’s new goalkeeper coach, Ilyes Mzoughi, has expressed concerns about the goalkeeping department, leading to the acquisition of Ntwari. Mzoughi reportedly believes Molefe is not yet ready for the demands of the South African top-flight league.
WILLIAM SHONGWE SPEAKS ON BONTLE MOLEFE
The retired goalkeeper is of the view that Molefe should go out on loan, even if it’s in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. This will give Molefe some experience as he will get some playing time in the lower divisions.
“I don’t know how willing he is to be loaned out so he can try his luck elsewhere, not get sold, but a loan so he can get some time game, maybe first division football,” Shongwe told FARPost.
“I think that will help a great deal for his own mental state. But if he is willing to bide some time on the sidelines, he can do so, but he needs the game time and the experience. He is not getting any younger.”
