Sekhukhune captain Linda Mntambo on losing Elias Mokwana

Sekhukhune United captain Linda Mntambo has shared his thoughts on the imminent departure of winger Elias Mokwana.

Mokwana is on the brink of a move to Tunisian giants Espérance. The 24-year-old was captured landing in Tunis alongside senior club official Floyd Mbele on Tuesday.

He joined Sekhukhune in 2022 and went on to become one of the key players for the club. He was also rewarded with a Bafana Bafana call-up under coach Hugo Broos.

SEKHUKHUNE UNITED STAR TIPPED TO SUCCEED IN HIS NEW JOURNEY

“Elias has been our star player. We can not shy away from that,” Mntambo told the media. He has done extremely well for himself, getting a national call-up and playing with Bafana in the qualifiers. I think he has earned his move because he has done extremely well. As I said, we have always had quality and depth within the squad.

“It’s not only Elias. We have lost Kamohelo [Mokotjo] to our rivals [Cape Town City FC], who we are going to play against,” added Mntambo.

“But that is not a problem because we still have the depth and the bulk of the players who were there last season. So it’s our responsibility to make sure that these young ones and the new players adapt as quickly as possible, and I think this seven-week break actually worked in our favour for our players to adapt and acclimatise to how things are done at Sekhukhune United.”

LINDA MNTAMBO SENDS WELL WISHES TO SOON-TO-BE FORMER TEAMMATE ELIAS MOKWANA

“I hope he succeeds wherever he goes. He has been a player who is teachable and listens. When he arrived the first day, I was surprised by how much talent he has. Even when he was still our star player, Elias remained a youngster within the club. He listened to the senior players and coaches. So he has never grown a big head.

“So I think wherever he is going he knows that one thing that always motivates us as footballers is the background that we come from. He knows his home background and what he wants to do and help his family. So I don’t see him failing to succeed.”
