Danny Jordaan reveals province that wants to host Bafana vs Nigeria clash
SAFA president Danny Jordaan says there’s a high demand to host Bafana Bafana matches with one of the provinces having already requested to stage the Nigeria clash.
South Africa will host Nigeria in September next year for the second round of group-stage matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Their first meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in Uyo in June.
With Hugo Broos’ troops in form, Jordaan says there’s a surge of interest from cities across South Africa to host Bafana matches. Their recent World Cup qualifying match against Zimbabwe at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein was a sell-out.
According to Jordaan, EThekwini Municipality has submitted an early bid to host the high-profile clash against the Super Eagles next year.
JORDAAN SAYS ALL CITIES WANT TO HOST BAFANA NOW
“Let me tell you, they all want Bafana now and Banyana,” said. “Bafana is number 10 on the African continent; they’re in the top 10. Banyana are the African champions and are number two.
“So, both our teams now are performing and there is demand for them. You see what happened in Bloemfontein; the stadium was packed. There was another group outside the stadium, they don’t have tickets but want to come in.
“We had to ask police to stop them, there’s a big push now. People want to see and support Bafana, they want to get into the stadium. It’s something we haven’t seen for a long time in this country. Our teams are back, and they’re performing.
“There’s a province who said they want the Nigeria game, the [KZN] premier was there and the MEC of Sports.”
SAFA KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Kwenza Ngwenya echoed the sentiment: “Yes, we want it in Durban.”
