Khanyisa Mayo explains what swayed him into joining CR Belouizdad
Former Cape Town City FC striker Khanyisa Mayo has explained what influenced his decision to sign for Algerian side CR Belouizdad in what was a surprise move.
The Algerian side unveiled the 25-year-old on Friday following a transfer reportedly worth about R20 million.
Mayo left the Citizens after spending three seasons at the club, having joined at the start of the 2021/22 season from Richards Bay FC.
His signature was sought after by several big clubs, including the big three in Gauteng and some abroad.
But he opted to move to Algeria, and Mayo has since revealed that the visit of CR Belouizdad’s president to South Africa to persuade him to join the Algerian side was a crucial factor in his decision.

“The negotiations with the president went well. The president himself was a lovely guy. He came to South Africa to convince me to come to the club,” Mayo told CR Belouizdad TV.
“I looked at the club, its history, and everything else. I saw it’s one of the big clubs in Algeria, and that’s why I’m here today joining the team.
“The president was good. We spoke about negotiations, and everything went well. And I think for me, it’s to go further and enjoy the family that I’m joining right now because the president is wonderful, and we have a good relationship with him.
“He welcomed me very well into the team, so I’m grateful to be here. Other clubs had an interest in me, but I chose this team because I love the team. It’s a great team with great people and the lovely city of Algeria. The people in the city are very welcoming.”
Mayo has promised to bang goals for the North African side, saying he’s looking forward to the 2024/25 season.

“They must expect Khanyisa Mayo, the goal-scoring machine, someone who’s going to work, someone who’s going to be loved, someone who’s going to love the family.
“Everyone will be excited to watch each and every game. I can’t wait to meet the fans. I think it’s gonna be a great season for CRB and me,” he added.
