Premiership football finally return to Seshego after two decades

The Polokwane Municipality and Magesi FC have confirmed that the Seshego Stadium will host the club’s home matches this season, 22 years after it last hosted a premiership match.

The now-defunct Ria Stars were the last premiership team to play at the stadium before they ceased to exist in 2002.

Other former National First Division [NFD] clubs, such as Bay United and Winners Park, used to utilise the venue. But since then, the stadium has been mostly used by SAFA amateur clubs and local tournaments.

Since the promotion of Magesi FC to the Betway Premiership, there has been speculation about their home venue. While the club will play their opening few matches of the 2024/25 season at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, it has now been confirmed that they will move to Seshego before the end of November this year.

The decision to host PSL games was also confirmed by the Polokwane municipality following their council sitting last week.”Council approved the request by Magesi FC to partner with the municipality in hosting their home games in Polokwane for the 2024/25 season,” the municipality said.

“Magesi will play most of their games at the revamped Seshego stadium. Magesi were crowned NFD champions for the 2023/2024 season. They will now compete in the 2024/2025 PSL elite league.”

Some of the upgrades at the stadium include the installation of a new pitch, VIP section and athletic track.

MAGESI FC SET TO TAKE THEIR HOME MATCHES TO LIMPOPO’S BIGGEST TOWNSHIP

Speaking during a heroes welcome of Limpopo Sports stars on Saturday, Municipality Mayor John Mpe said he hopes other local teams would take their home matches to the Townships.

“We have made an effort as Polokwane Municipality to talk to the PSL for them to guide us to upgrade Seshego Stadium,” he said.

“So that Seshego Stadium can have the ability to stage PSL teams. Specifically to make sure that Magesi is attracted. We also believe that even Polokwane City will be attracted to play in our townships.

“I also hope that Sekhukhune will take their matches there. They are the only club in Polokwane that takes the matches in the biggest stadium in the province.”

Magesi Public Relations Officer Abel Rakoma also confirmed at the same event that they will be taking the majority of their games to the venue.

“Seshego Stadium is likely to be ready before October 1st, 2024. If that stadium is ready, the majority of our games will be played there. It’s just a walking distance for Seshego people to come and watch the Blue Nation.

“It’s just unfortunate that when we will be defeating Sekhukhune United on 14 September it will not be ready yet,” he said jokingly.
