Arendse’ candid advice for Goss to dethrone Williams as Bafana first-choice goalie

SuperSport United assistant coach Andre Arendse has shared candid advice with goalkeeper Ricardo Goss on dethroning Ronwen Williams as the Bafana Bafana first-choice goalie.

Goss recently concluded a two-season loan move from Mamelodi Sundowns to SuperSport United ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

The talented shot-stopper spent the last two campaigns with Matsatsantsa after struggling to break into the Sundowns matchday squad with Williams the preferred Number one.

Goss signed with the Brazilians at the start of the 2020/21 season from Bidvest Wits, who sold their SA elite league status to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC [TTM].

In his first season with Masandawana, the 30-year-old made only five appearances across all competitions. He conceded four goals and kept three clean sheets. Since his arrival at SuperSport, Goss has established himself as a regular starter for the club, and he’s been the regular second-choice keeper at Bafana Bafana.

The former Golden Arrows goalie played second fiddle to Williams in the Bafana squad that won a bronze medal at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory.

WHAT DID ANDRE ARENDSE SAY ABOUT RICARDO GOSS?

Despite SuperSport losing 3-1 in extra-time against Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 quarter-finals on Saturday, Arendse admitted that Goss has what it takes to push Williams for the number one jersey at Bafana.

“I had a conversation with Ricardo last season, and he needs to go to the next level of his game. He needs to push Ronwen Williams hard on the national team. Goss needs to keep more clean sheets for SuperSport,” Arendse said.

“He can do that with better communication by making himself a lot more visible and vocal on the field. I mean, this game [against Pirates] was the first game of the season, and he produced a Man of the Match performance. He conceded three goals, but he made three or four top saves.

“He was vocal. I could hear him from the sideline, and he’s well on his way. His biggest challenge is to be consistent. I have no doubt that he’ll move to the next level of his game.”
