What hindered Luther Singh’s breakthrough at FC Copenhagen
FC Augsburg coach Jess Thorup has pinpointed a key factor that impeded South African star Luther Singh’s progress at Danish Superliga outfit FC Copenhagen.
The German side recently wrapped up their pre-season training camp in Mpumalanga, South Africa, where they participated in the inaugural Mpumalanga Premier’s International Cup. The Bundesliga outfit, aiming to fine-tune their preparations for the upcoming season, faced off against Tanzanian giants Young Africans and DStv Premiership side TS Galaxy.
In a surprising turn of events, the Betway Premiership side, TS Galaxy, emerged victorious, defeating the German side 2-1 in the final to be crowned champions.
SA attacker Singh worked under coach Thorup in the 2021/22 campaign at FC Copenhagen. Singh joined the club from Liga Portugal 2 side FC Paços de Ferreira.
The winger’s stay at the club was short, lasting one season. Overall, the 26-year-old only made seven appearances in all competitions and grabbed an assist.
INJURY SETBACKS BLOCKED LUTHER SINGH’S BREAKTHROUGH AT FC COPENHAGEN
The 54-year-old mentor Thorup says Singh failed to make a breakthrough in Denmark because he kept on sustaining injuries. Singh also faced stiff competition in the team for a place in the starting line-up. However, he played some games to showcase his skills.
“We brought in Luther [Singh] at a time where [sorry for him] he had some injuries,” said Thorup in Mpumalanga.
“At the beginning it was very difficult for him to get a place in the squad and on the pitch, even though he played some games.
“He was a great guy, great to work with, and had some great skills. I’m sorry for him; he didn’t make his breakthrough in Copenhagen. But he managed to go there and make a great effort. I just wish him the best for the future.”
After parting ways with FC Copenhagen, the Bafana Bafana international joined another Liga Portugal 2 outfit, GD Chaves, in the 2022/23 season.
But a season later, the winger joined Serbian top-tier side FK Cukaricki. Recently, Singh completed a move to Cyprus club AEL Limassol ahead of the 2024/25 season.
