Mokwana explains why he snubbed Chiefs & Sundowns for Esperance

Former Sekhukhune United winger Elias Mokwana has explained why he snubbed Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns to join Esperance Sportive de Tunis.

In an interview with Taraji TV, the media arm of his new club, Mokwana, discussed his recent transfer to the prominent North African team.

Reports indicate that the deal, valued at approximately R8 million, is a three-year contract that will bind him to the club until 2027.

Mokwana acknowledged that both Amakhosi and the Brazilians expressed interest in acquiring his services. However, he opted for a move beyond South Africa to gain exposure in the northern region of the continent.

WHY MOKWANA CHOSE ESPERANCE OVER CHIEFS AND SUNDOWNS

“There were some teams that wanted me like [Mamelodi] Sundowns and [Kaizer] Chiefs, but for myself, I wanted to move away from home to get more exposure,” he said.

“We all know in Africa that Esperance is one of the biggest clubs in the world. So, I just wanted to come here to experience it and give my all. I’m a winner, I’m a player that likes to play on the line, take on the defenders, create opportunities for my teammates and score some goals for myself.”

He expressed his excitement about the opportunity to fulfil his aspiration of participating in the CAF Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE & CLUB WORLD CUP DREAMS TO COME TRUE FOR MOKWANA

“Everyone since I got here from the airport to the hotel, when I got to meet the players, it was a wonderful experience,” added Mokwana.

“Even the fans, [the club] has got such a great fan base which I’m looking forward to playing in front of at the stadium.

“I feel great it’s like a dream come true because I’ve always dreamt of playing CAF Champions League and Club World Cup and World Cups. So, me coming here, it’s a dream come true. I have to give my all so that I can continue working for Taraji so we can win all of them [trophies].”

While some believe he went for a bad move, he’s still confident that he made the right decision by joining the Tunisian side.

“Some at home think it’s a bad move, but I really think it’s a great move. To play for one of the biggest clubs in the world…hopefully, I will continue working hard so I can open doors for the ones that are back home so they can come here and enjoy.”
