Ex-Pirates and Sundowns defender resurfaces at Mpumalanga side
Ex-Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Siyabonga Zulu has resurfaced at Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League side Phezulu FC.
Phezulu FC finished fourth in their provincial ABC Motsepe League log standings last season, having accumulated 46 points from 28 matches.
The Mpumalanga-based outfit is already in camp in the Gauteng province, where they will play some friendlies to prepare for the 2024/25 season.
SIYABONGA ZULU TRAINING WITH PHEZULU FC
Zulu has been spotted training with the SA football third-tier side following the relegation of NB La Masia from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last campaign.
The 30-year-old joined La Masia in October 2023 with the aim of helping the club survive the relegation zone. However, it was never meant to be.
The experienced defender also played for clubs such as Blackburn Rovers FC, Sivutsa Stars, United FC, Chippa United, Black Leopards, All Stars, and the now-defunct Platinum Stars.
It won’t be a surprise to see Zulu continue with his football career at Phezulu FC for the upcoming season as the side look to challenge for title honours in order to qualify for national playoffs and get promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
This year, SA football witnessed Kruger United of Mpumalanga securing promotion to the SA football second tier after finishing as one of the finalists at the SAFA’s ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs held in Upington, Northern Cape. Phezulu FC will be motivated by Kruger’s success going into the new season and want to follow in their footsteps.
The well-travelled defender started his football career in the Pirates junior ranks until he signed his first professional contract with the Buccaneers in January 2011. But, he was then sent out on loan to Blackburn Rovers.
SAFA Mpumalanga will announce the starting date of the 2024/25 ABC Motsepe League season in due course.
