Maritzburg United to be rebranded to Durban City, PSL approves

FARPost has established that PSL have approved Maritzburg United’s name change to Durban City with the club permanently relocating to Durban.

Last week, the club’s CEO Younus Kadodia confirmed their intention to relocate from Pietermaritzburg to Durban due to a dispute regarding the utilisation of Harry Gwala Stadium, necessitating the search for a new home venue.

After their relegation to the second division, Maritzburg were prohibited from using Harry Gwala Stadium.

Consequently, Royal AM were granted the right to utilise the facility. Last season, Team of Choice played their home matches at Sugar Ray Xulu in Clermont, Durban.

Kadodia further confirmed that they proposed Chatsworth Stadium to the PSL as the venue for their Motsepe Foundation Championship matches in the forthcoming campaign.

Speaking to the media during the KZN Premier’s Cup in Ulundi, club’s CEO Younus Kadodia stated they were looking to build another strong fan base in and around the Chatsworth area, having successfully done so in Pietermaritzburg over the past 21 years.

KADODIA SAYS THEY ARE LOOKING TO BUILD ANOTHER STRONG FAN BASE

“We’ve built up a strong community-based brand over the last 21 years. And unfortunately, we’ve seen the impact of our fans not being able to travel to Durban for all our home games,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate, and this will be the second season that it’s happening. “We have to look to get the support from the communities around there [Chartsworth].”

Maritzburg will be aiming to return to the top-flight next season having suffered relegation at the end of the 2022/23 season.
