Peter Hyballa steps down amidst scandal

Peter Hyballa’s brief and tumultuous tenure as the head coach of Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United has come to an abrupt end.

Just a month after taking the reins, Hyballa’s time at the club was marred by a sex scandal, leading to his departure.

“There were allegations of misconduct, and they were serious enough to prompt a swift response from Sekhukhune United. The club conducted an internal investigation, and the coach opted to resign,” a source said.

The German was not on the bench when Babina Noko played Cape Town City FC in an MTN8 Cup clash on Saturday at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium. McDonald Makhubedu was in charge as Sekhukhune fell 1-0.

Hyballa replaced Lehlohonolo Seema, who was axed after just seven months at the club. Sekhukhune replaced him with the controversial German who oversaw their pre-season. His brief stay at the club has not been without controversy, with allegations of fights and bullying against players.

The 48-year-old coach is not new to controversy, having been shown the exit door at two of his previous jobs for fighting with players. At the Limpopo side, Hyballa reportedly picked fights with his backroom staff during his six-week stint.

PETER HYBALLA HAS A HISTORY OF NOT STAYING LONG AT CLUBS

During the pre-season, Hyballa guided the club in seven friendly matches, losing four, drawing one and winning only two. The club is back in the market looking for another coach. Seema is still unattached and could be considered for a return.

Sekhukhune came close to appointing Morena Ramoreboli before settling for Hyballa. However, the Jwaneng Galaxy mentor made an eleventh-hour U-turn. Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Fernando Da Cruz was also on their radar before eventually taking up a role at Amakhosi.

This was Hyballa’s first job on the African continent, having previously coached in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Slovakia. He has a history of not staying long at clubs, with his longest stint lasting 238 days.
