What surprised Lebusa about Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mosa Lebusa has revealed what surprised him about the club’s new assistant coach, Romain Folz.

The 34-year-old coach joined the Brazilians a few weeks ago to form a new technical team led by Manqoba Mngqithi, with Steve Komphela serving as a senior coach.

Folz arrived at Sundowns during the pre-season tour in Austria to beef up the technical team ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

Sundowns are currently undergoing drastic changes in the coaching department following the departure of head coach Rulani Mokwena.

The highly-rated tactician shockingly left Sundowns with three years left before the expiry of his contract. Mokwena won two league titles since taking over the hotseat in October 2022 and he was the PSL Coach of the Season for the past two seasons in a row.

After leaving Sundowns, Mokwena took over the coaching reins at Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.

Meanwhile, the former Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC mentor Folz was a surprise addition at Downs, who snapped him up after a stint at FIFA.

Lebusa has shared an interesting view about Folz, revealing that he surprised everyone on the team by taking charge of training sessions.

“It’s a breath of fresh air [having Romain Folz at Sundowns]; as a young coach, he came, and many of us have never worked with him. And when he came, the first thing he did was to take charge and we were surprised with how bold he is,” Lebusa said.

“But as time goes, we got to understand the type of a person he is; he’s very straightforward, and I think he’s going help us a lot in the team.”

In addition, the former Ajax Cape Town captain will be looking to solidify his place in the Sundowns’ defence under the Mngqithi. Lebusa is competing with Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, Rushine De Reuck and new signing Kegan Johannes.
