Polokwane City coach explains phone call during MTN8 clash

Head coach of Polokwane City FC Phuti Mohafe has explained why he had to take a phone call in the middle of their MTN8 quarter-final encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns.

PLK City were knocked out of the MTN8 following a 1-0 loss to Masandawana at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.

An own goal by Polokwane defender Thabang Matuludi during extra-time was enough to see Sundowns through. But Mohafe was caught on camera using his cellphone during extra time. While other clubs have advanced ways of communicating, Mohafe opted for a normal cellphone call.

“With me calling. I have to get advice from my other technical team members,” he explained to the media.

“It’s not a one-man show. So I had to call and finalise what was on my mind, and we had to discuss that before I make my final decision.”

Mohafe believes they were their worst enemy on the day by missing chances. “I think we started slowly. What sums the match up is the chances that we missed and the chances that they should have scored in the first 15 minutes,” he added.

“Going into half-time at 0-0, it was good for us. We made the very same mistake again of sitting back and allowing them to gain confidence. It was as if we told them to go and sit [back].

“We sat back a little too deep, and that frustrated them a bit with transitions leading to the red card of the Sundowns keeper [Denis Onyango].”

PLK City will be back in action on 14 September when they host AmaZulu FC at Peter Mokaba Stadium in a Betway Premiership tie.
