Sundowns’ Matias Esquivel reunites with former club CA Talleres in Argentina
Mamelodi Sundowns forward Matias Esquivel has completed a season-long loan move to reunite with his former team, Club Atlético Talleres, in Argentina.
Esquivel’s first stint with CA Talleres was in 2022. He played 31 matches in all competitions, scoring six goals before moving to Club Atletico Lanus.
The attacking midfielder came highly-rated at Sundowns. He linked with the club in the middle of the 2023/24 season from CA Lanús.
In Sundowns colours, the 25-year-old made 13 appearances in all competitions, netting two goals and grabbing an assist as the Tshwane giants clinched their seventh successive DStv Premiership title [now called the Betway Premiership].
At Masandawana, Esquivel faced competition from other attacking midfielders, such as Themba Zwane, Lucas Ribeiro, Marcelo Allende, Neo Maema, Thembinkosi Lorch, Tashreeq Matthews, and Sphelele Mkhulise.
On Sunday, after a narrow 1-0 victory against Polokwane City FC in the MTN8 quarter-finals, Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi addressed Esquivel’s situation, saying, “I think it was the best decision for the club.”
MATIAS ESQUIVEL MOVES BACK TO ARGENTINA WITH CA TALLERES
“Club Atlético #Talleres reports that Matias Esquivel is the new player of the institution. And is already training with the senior team,” read a statement.
“Matias Esquivel, an acquaintance of the club who returns in a season of triple competition, is a new reinforcement and joins the institution for a period of one year.
“The Scouting Department of Club Talleres has closely followed the evolution of Matías, highlighting his versatility to occupy more than one position within the midfield.
“Furthermore, due to his technical quality and agility, Esquivel is a player who can provide solutions to the team, generating danger in the last third of the playing field. Esquivel also has a good repertoire of dribbles, assists and execution of mid-distance shots. Finally, the experience gained during his last two seasons has given the player the ability to mature in decision-making.”
