Stade Reims honours former Pirates star Marshall Munetsi

French Ligue 1 outfit Stade Reims has honoured former Orlando Pirates star Marshall Munetsi ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Munetsi has been a vital cog at the club since his switch from the Soweto giants in 2019. Since then, the Zimbabwean international has made 129 appearances for the modest French outfit, scoring 17 goals and 12 assists.

As such the club has decided to honour the 28-year-old, who has grown to be instrumental for both club and country, Zimbabwe.

New Stade Reims coach Luka Elsner has named the versatile midfielder as the vice-captain. Teddy Teuma is the new captain.

The club, Stade Reims, revealed the plausible development via a statement on their website. “Teddy Teuma, a leader by word, now becomes one by his status. With a core of experienced players around him, he will be able to guide the team effectively,” the club said.

“Marshall Munetsi, recognised for his key role in the integration of young people and the cohesion of the group, will continue to occupy a central place in the SDR locker room. Emmanuel Agbadou and Yehvann Diouf assert themselves, for their part, as new pillars of the collective.”

The new captain, Teuma, said he is elated to share the leadership role with Munetsi. He said, “It’s a source of pride and joy to wear this armband.

“It’s part of what I want to build with the club. I want to be the captain that Stade de Reims deserves.

“I don’t claim to replace Yunis, and I don’t intend to do so. There are several leaders in the locker room, including Marshall, Yehvann and Agba. Our goal is to support the youngsters and pull the whole group up.”

Ligue 1 action kicks off on Friday, 16 August, with Stade Reims taking Lille on Saturday. In addition, Munetsi is Zimbabwe’s vice-captain. He was the stand-in captain when Zimbabwe played Bafana Bafana in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.
