Rulani drops major update on Zungu’s possible signing at Wydad

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has dropped a major update on the possibility of signing Bongani Zungu at Wydad Casablanca.

Zungu is currently a free agent after unexpectedly parting ways with Sundowns at the end of last season. The central midfielder was a surprise exit from Masandawana after playing a pivotal role in helping the club clinch their seventh successive league title.

The 31-year-old featured in 30 appearances across all competitions in Sundowns colours and provided three assists.

Zungu also played a crucial role when Downs won the inaugural African Football League [AFL] after beating Wydad Casablanca 3-2 on aggregate in the final in October 2023.

Meanwhile, Mokwena shockingly left Sundowns over a month ago with three years left on his contract. The highly-rated coach was reportedly not seeing eye-to-eye with the club’s Sporting Director Flemming Berg which resulted in Mokwena stepping down as the head coach.

Following Mokwena’s appointment as Wydad’s new coach, several media reports suggested that the duo could reunite at Morroco for the new season.

WHAT DID RULANI MOKWENA SAY ABOUT BONGANI ZUNGU’S SIGNING?

In an interview with the South African Football Journalists Association [SAFJA], Mokwena admitted that the experienced midfielder is a player they are looking to bring on board.

“Will we see South African players [at Wydad]? I don’t know, the players you’ve mentioned, I can speak about Bongani Zungu because he’s not attached at the moment,” Mokwena said.

“There is a huge possibility. I’m a big Bongani Zungu fan, and I think everybody knows. I love Bongani Zungu as a person.

“This is what’s making him a top footballer. He’s an incredible human being, so we just have to see because it’s a bit more complicated than people think. It is a big possibility, and I think it’s something that we are considering.”

In addition, Mokwena is also closing in on a reunion with another former Sundowns star, Percy Tau, who is facing an uncertain future at Al Ahly.
