Rulani’s Wydad Casablanca emerge as contenders for Cassius Mailula’s signature

Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Casablanca have emerged as strong contenders for Toronto FC striker Cassius Mailula, FARPost has learnt.

The 23-year-old has been with the Major League Soccer outfit since July last year when he abruptly departed Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of the 2023/24 season.

However, he has struggled to establish himself at the club featuring only in five matches in the MLS, three in the Canadian Championship and one in the MLS Next Pro.

His move to North America jeopardised his chances for a regular place in the Bafana Bafana team as he had already earned two caps before he left.

It’s understood that his club, The Reds, are exploring loan options to provide him with regular playing time.

The Tshwane giants academy graduate has reportedly turned down a loan offer from Croatian club HNK Gorica, who sought to secure his services for their ongoing season.

WYDAD CASABLANCA FAVOURITES TO LAND CASSIUS MAILULA’S SIGNATURE

Now, according to FARPost sources, Wydad Casablanca, who are under the tutelage of Rulani Mokwena are front runners to land the signature of Mailula.

The forward, hailing from Ga-Molepo, made a significant impact during the 2022/23 campaign at Sundowns, where he was mentored by Mokwena, who has previously clearly demonstrated his admiration for Mailula.

During that season, he scored 15 goals in 31 matches across various competitions. As Wydad are seeking a forward, Mokwena will be aiming to restore that level of performance in Mailula.

Wydad have already brought on board Abdelali Mhamdi, Jawad Khalouk, Mohamed Moufid, Mohamed Rayhi, Hamza Sakhi, Nabil Marmouk, Zakaria Nassik, Nasim Chadli, Ade Oguns, Ayman Dairani, Bodda Mouhsine, Jawad Khalouk and Mouad Enzo.

Mokwena’s side has also been linked with former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu and Al Ahly star Percy Tau.

The club is hoping to turn things around in this upcoming campaign having finished last season in sixth position in the Botola Pro.
