Van Heerden’s challenge to CT City in the 2024/25 season

Former Cape Town City defender Marc van Heerden has thrown a challenge to the team ahead of the highly-anticipated 2024/25 PSL season.

The 2024/25 campaign kicked off at the beginning of August as last season’s top eight finishers played in the MTN8. Then, the much anticipated Betway Premiership will start on Saturday, 14 September.

CT City have been busy in the transfer market beefing up their squad. The team have acquired the services of players like Haashim Domingo, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Fortune Makaringe, Carlinhos, Kayden Francis, Elson Sithole, Sibusiso Ziba, Lefa Aphane and Prins Tjiueza.

In the past nine seasons, the Citizens have been one of the toughest teams to beat in the league. They have been consistent, ending each campaign in the top eight. However, the Capetonians have been struggling for titles.

The recently retired 36-year-old has tipped his former team to win a silverware this season. The last time CT City clinched a trophy was back in the 2018/19 season, winning the MTN8. In the 2021 MTN8 they were runners-up, after losing 3-2 on penalties against Mamelodi Sundowns, the match had ended 1-1 after extra-time.

Van Heerden further believes that the squad assembled has got all it takes to conquer and achieve something.

“If this season everything clicks together, it should be really a promising one,” van Heerden told FARPost. “They should compete and win a title this season; they deserve it. It’s been long overdue.

“In the transfer market, I think they really did some good business. Haashim [Domingo], Fortune [Makaringe] and [Kamohelo] Mokotjo are experienced players, technically gifted.

“These can all change the game amongst other signings that were brought in the team. The team have been consistent every season finishing in the top eight, they once went as higher as finishing second. I think it’s really possible.”
