Cape Town Spurs rising star eyeing big transfer move

Cape Town Spurs rising star Luke Baartman has opened up on his ambitions to complete a big transfer move following the club’s relegation to the second-tier league.

The Urban Warriors have been relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after spending only one season in the SA’s top-flight.

CT Spurs gained promotion to the Premiership at the start of last season through the Promotional/Relegation playoffs of the PSL.

However, in the SA elite league, now known as the Betway Premiership, the club endured a long run of unconvincing results as they won only six league matches, drew five and lost 19 times. They collected 23 points in 30 matches, which was not enough for them to retain their status in the elite league.

Despite CT Spurs’ relegation to the second-tier, they have a handful of promising young players who attracted interest from big clubs in South Africa.

Due to their impressive displays in the Premiership, Asanele Velebayi and Chumani Butsaka caught the attention of Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC, respectively. But CT Spurs are yet to entertain both offers.

WHAT DID LUKE BAARTMAN SAY ABOUT A POTENTIAL BIG MOVE?

With the Cape Town-based outfit poised to lose a few of their players ahead of the new season, Baartman says he dreams of improving his performances to earn a big move.

The attacking midfielder featured in nine matches across all competitions for CT Spurs and netted two goals. He was sidelined due to injuries.

“I think for the next two years, I want to play this season [in the NFD] out and score many goals. Hopefully, there could be bigger opportunities from bigger teams,” said Baartman.

“So I’ll stay humble this year and wait for the right opportunity to come. I think when the opportunity comes, I’ll grab it with both hands because opportunities don’t come a lot. I must just work hard and wait for the right opportunity, like I said.”

The highly-rated youngster will be hoping to follow the footsteps of his former teammate Rushwin Dortley who signed for Kaizer Chiefs in the current transfer window.

Dortley joined Amakhosi alongside Bongani Sam, Gaston Sirino, Fiacre Ntwari and Miguel Ignacio for the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
