Orebotse Mongae joins Upington City

Former TS Galaxy winger Orebotse ‘Bobo’ Mongae will play his football at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City next season. The 31-year-old enterprising winger parted ways with Galaxy last month along with veterans Vuyo Mere, Bernard Parker and Lindokuhle Mbatha.

Upington were quick to snap him up to bolster their squad ahead of the 2024/25 term. The Northern Cape outfit finished sixth last season, 13 points adrift of champions Magesi. They will be looking to challenge for honours in the new season.

The former North West University (NWU) Soccer Institute player spent two seasons at Galaxy, having joined them in 2022. The pacy winger previously had spells with Botswana side Miscellaneous SC. His stint in the neighbouring country came before his time at Baroka FC in 2018.

Mongae also played for Royal Eagles [now known as Royal AM], BCM Stars FC and Platinum City Rovers. His experience will certainly come in handy for Bafana Ba Gucci. The club recently added Coach Dithetho Mototo to their technical team.

The announcement came days after the departure of Brandon Truter, who has since joined Richards Bay in the Betway Premiership. Truter replaced Vusi Vilakazi, who recently cut ties with the KZN outfit.

UPINGTON CITY’S FIRST TWO FIXTURES

Meanwhile, the season will kick off on the weekend of 23, 24, and 25 August 2024. The opening weekend will feature two matches on Friday, 23 August, including a highly anticipated clash between newly promoted Highbury FC and Limpopo giants, Black Leopards. Saturday, 24 August, will see four matches played, with two more scheduled for Sunday, 25 August.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship season is set to conclude on Saturday, 18 May 2025.

Upington City kick off their campaign with a tie against JDR Stars at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve on Saturday 24 August.

Their first home game is on the 30th of August at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington against Baroka.
