Collins Makgaka opens up on unsuccessful Pirates stint

Newly-signed Baroka FC midfielder Collins Makgaka has opened up on his disappointing stint at Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

Makgaka was amongst the 11 players unveiled by the Motsepe Foundation Championship club, Baroka, on Saturday ahead of the new season in the second-tier league.

He left Baroka in 2020 for a dream move to the Buccaneers in 2020. But the 28-year-old failed to cement a regular starting place in the team.

This promoted a move to Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United for the 2023/24 season. But Makgaka also didn’t have a fruitful time at the club and left at the end of the last campaign.

WHAT WENT WRONG DURING STAY AT ORLANDO PIRATES FOR COLLINS MAKGAKA?

“Some of the things I don’t know why they were happening. But yeah they were happening,” he told FARPost.

“My stay at Pirates was okay, I was just lacking game time and that was the only thing. No [there was nothing I could have done better], there was nothing,” he said.

Makgaka also added that it was difficult for him to establish what was the reason for his lack of game time as it would appear to be disrespectful to the coaches.

“No, I hardly do that because it’s like I am putting pressure on the coach that he should play me,” he explained.

“Some coaches take it personally and some accept it when you ask them what to do to improve. But others obviously make it difficult and it’s like you are challenging them. So I have never done that.”

“I was disappointed and on the other hand, I felt like I wanted to move away and get game time and confidence back. It was hard for me. I played less than 30 games in the past three years and it’s something that you don’t want to experience as a player,” he said.

Having spent five seasons at Baroka before his Pirates move, Makgaka believes the move back to Limpopo will help revive his career.

“I wanted to play football. Here they know me and they believe in me. So, I decided to come back to get more game time. That’s what I am looking forward to. So it feels good to be here where I started my career. So I felt it was the right move to start over.”
