Cassius Mailula reunite with Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Casablanca

Toronto FC have announced Cassius Mailula’s move to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, where he will reunite with his former mentor, Rulani Mokwena.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns winger, Mailula, joins Wydad on a loan move ahead of the new campaign.

Toronto confirmed that Mokwena’s side will have the power to exercise a permanent transfer for the Bafana Bafana international when his loan spell comes to an end.

Mailula signed for Toronto in July last year from Bafana Ba Style but struggled for game time at the club. The Limpopo-born made his debut for the MLS side in August 2023 against Columbus Crew.

The 23-year-old scored his first goal for Toronto in the first round of the 2024 Canadian Championship in April this year when they thrashed Simcoe County Rovers 5-0.

Overall, Mailula featured in eight games across all competitions for Toronto in the MLS regular campaign. He also contributed two goals and weighed in with one assist.

TORONTO FC OFFICIAL STATEMENT

“Toronto FC announced that the club has sent forward Cassius Mailula on loan to Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club of the Botola Pro [First Division] through July 31, 2025. Wydad AC will have the option to exercise a permanent transfer for Mailula at the end of this loan,” stated the club in a press release.

Mailula has two national team caps, having made his debut against Liberia in the AFCON qualifiers tie in March 2023.

The talented winger’s reunion with Mokwena at Wydad will be expected to produce better results, just like they did during their time at Sundowns.

When Mailula left Sundowns to join Toronto last year, the winger had scored 16 goals and provided five assists in 32 appearances across all competitions for the Chloorkop-based outfit.

Mokwena joined Wydad as their new head coach in July 2024 after his shocking departure from Masandawana.
