JDR Stars tie down former SuperSport United striker with new deal
JDR Stars have tied down former SuperSport United striker Prince Nxumalo with a new deal ahead of the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship season.
Nxumalo had an impressive campaign in the second-tier last season after winning the Golden Boot award in the league. The experienced striker netted 18 goals in the league, beating Black Leopards talisman Bethuel Mazeu who scored 15 goals.
In what was his best season in the Motsepe Foundation, Nxumalo guided Stars to a fifth-place finish on the league table. They missed out on gaining promotion to the Betway Premiership as Magesi FC won the league to seal automatic promotion to the SA top-flight.
Nxumalo has been with JDR Stars for two seasons after signing from Sekhukhune United at the start of the 2022/23 season.
In his first season with the Pretoria-based side, Nxumalo featured in 17 league games and registered five goals to his account.
Before joining Stars, the 34-year-old played for several teams, such as Ajax Cape Town [now known as Cape Town Spurs], SuperSport United, Baroka FC, Golden Arrows, and Sekhukhune United.
While Nxumalo was expected to return to the Premiership, the goal-poacher signed a one-year deal with Stars, with the option to extend it for a year. His initial contract at the club expired on the 30th of June 2024.
NDITSHENI NEMASISI CONFIRMS NEW DEAL FOR PRINCE NXUMALO
Speaking exclusively to FARPost, JDR boss Nditsheni Nemasisi confirmed that Nxumalo will stay with his charges for the upcoming season.
“Nxumalo is certainly staying with us. He has committed himself to another season with an option to renew,” Nemasisi said.
“So we’ve got him. We managed to keep him, and we also managed to keep Ishmael Wadi and Banele Hlophe. Those players are the front three that gave us results last season.
“When you look at that [keeping best-attacking players], we’ve kept our best players at the back except for Sibusiso Ziba, who joined Cape Town City FC.
“So a good thing about this whole thing is that we not starting afresh, we just added quality in what we already have. I think it’s now up to the mentality of the players to carry us through.”
