Barker drops hint on Ismael Toure after Chiefs cool down interest

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has shed light on the future of Ivorian defender Ismael Toure following the breakdown of negotiations for a move to Kaizer Chiefs.

Stellenbosch are reportedly keen to offload Toure due to his escalating wage demands. Despite a stellar debut season with Stellenbosch, garnering five man-of-the-match awards, Toure’s ambitions appear to lie beyond the Winelands outfit.

Chiefs’ initial interest in Toure waned after they secured the services of Angolan defender Miguel Inacio, a player favoured by coach Nasreddine Nabi. Inacio’s arrival on a three-year deal effectively ended any lingering hopes Toure had of joining the Soweto giants.

Compared to Toure, the 28-year-old Inacio boasts a more impressive resume, with stints in European leagues and the CAF Champions League under his belt.

In a recent interview on Radio 2000, Barker confirmed the signing of Brian Onyango but stated there were no current offers for Toure. The 26-year-old Ivorian has been linked with another Soweto giant, Orlando Pirates.

Barker highlighted Toure’s aspiration to play in Europe, hinting that this remains the primary objective. The Stellies coach acknowledged growing interest from European clubs and doubts about considering local offers.

Barker confirmed: “There are no offers for Ismail Toure. When he came to us, he expressed his dream of playing in Europe. That remains the primary objective. We’re seeing growing interest from European clubs. It’s unlikely we’ll entertain any local offers.”

With a move to Chiefs off the table and Stellenbosch eager to part ways, Toure’s future hangs in the balance. He made 34 appearances in all competitions during the 2023/24 season. His two goals came in the MTN8 and the inaugural Carling Knockout Cup.

Before joining the Cape Town outfit, Toure played for Marumo Gallants, making 29 appearances.
