Stellenbosch thrash Nsingizini to progress to Confed Cup next round

Stellenbosch FC have progressed to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup after thrashing Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs 5-0 in the second leg of the preliminary round at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Stellies came into this encounter with a strong advantage after securing a 3-0 victory over Nsingizini in the first leg last weekend.

STEVE BARKER MAKES THREE CHANGES IN THE STELLENBOSCH FC LINE-UP

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker made three changes in his starting line-up that faced Nsingizini last week.

Athenkosi Mcaba, Jayden Adams and Devin Titus started on the bench for this tie, with Liam De Kock, Genino Palace, and Langelihle Phili starting.

ESWATINI TEAMS HAVE FACED MORE THAN 10 DIFFERENT PSL SIDES

According to Opta Jabu statistics, Eswatini are the only country whose teams have played more than 10 different PSL clubs in the CAF inter-club competition.

The Cape Winelands-based side became the 11th PSL club to face a team from the neighbours, Eswatini.

Stellies’ new signee, Lehlogonolo Mojela, opened his account for the club just 10 minutes into the showdown. Mojela joined the side from TS Galaxy.

Langelihle Phili added to the scoreline when he netted the second goal for Stellies in the 27th minute. This was Phili’s first start and his first goal of the season.

Andre de Jong scored for the third consecutive game, tapping into an open net after a defensive blunder in the 51st minute of the contest.

Meanwhile, Omega Mdaka marked his debut in style by scoring the fourth goal for the hosts in the 85th minute. Mervin Boji scored the last goal of the day in the 89th minute.

WHO ARE STELLENBOSCH FC’S NEXT OPPONENT?

With Stellenbosch having advanced to the second preliminary round of the competition with an 8-0 win over Nsingizini on aggregate; their next opponent has already been confirmed.

The Confederation Cup debutants, Stellenbosch, will lock horns with DR Congo’s AS Vita in the second preliminary round.
