SAFA revoke controversial mass promotion of teams

SAFA has stamped its authority against three provincial teams that intended to implement a mass promotion in the ABC Motsepe League.

Limpopo, Western Cape, and Northern Cape are believed to be the three provinces affected.

The Western Cape reportedly wanted to have 36 teams, while Limpopo and Northern Cape wanted 24 teams each in their respective leagues. The idea has been met with criticism, with some clubs going as far as taking legal action.

In a letter issued by CEO Lydia Monyepao on Friday, provinces were warned against implementing mass promotion without the NEC’s approval.

“We would like to remind you that in terms of the Statutes, the Committee decisions are subject to ratification by the NEC,” read the communique.

PROVINCES HAVE BEEN WARNED TO FOLLOW PROPER PROCEDURES BEFORE INCREASING NUMBER OF TEAMS

“[SAFA] further reminds you that the ABC Motsepe League is a National League coordinated by the province. Any decision to increase the number of clubs must be made in consultation with the National Office/NEC.”

“We further advise that any increase in the number of the clubs or reduction of clubs in the League must be in line with SAFA Uniform Rules and Regulations.

“We hereby advise that no province must increase the number of clubs without proper approval by the National Executive Committee or following the Competitions Uniform Rules and Regulations.”

There are no FIFA rules limiting the number of teams in a domestic league, especially at the amateur level. The SAFA ABC Motsepe Leagues have yet to commence throughout the country.
