Farook Kadodia explains why he opted for Durban City FC name
Durban City FC chairman Farook Kadodia has outlined the reasons behind the club’s decision to adopt its new name following the rebranding from Maritzburg United.
City are now hosting their games at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban after they couldn’t secure the venue in Pietermaritzburg during their days as Maritzburg United.
They started off the new 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship season with a 2-1 victory over Casric Stars at home on Friday night, with a decent crowd backing the Simo Dladla-led side.
Kadodia says they wanted a name that would resonate deeply with the city, similar to their approach with the previous name, Maritzburg United in Pietermaritzburg.
He emphasised their goal of fostering a strong local support base that encompasses all racial groups within the community.
KADODIA ON WHY HE CHOSE DURBAN CITY NAME
“I wanted a name that would have synergy with the city,” said Kadodia. “That’s what we had in the past at Maritzburg. The thing is, by having Durban [in the club’s name], we always promote cohesion and nation-building.
“We want to see fans [from all the areas around]. And to identify with the name that’s [related] to the city, I think we attract people from all races.”
Kadodia was unclear is whether they consulted with the old Durban City owners to obtain permission for the use of the name.
However, he emphasised that the name has received a warm reception from many individuals in Durban.
DID KADODIA CONSULT WITH OLD DURBAN CITY OWNERS?
“I think it’s important, Durban City of the past is no more,” he added.
“There is no trademark on the name. So, we believed there was an opportunity of using this name.
“As I said, more than anything, people have been giving us calls to say that they are so happy and to say that the old is revived again.
