Mngqithi provides injury update on Kegan Johannes and Ronwen Williams

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has provided an update on the fitness of two players, Kegan Johannes and Ronwen Williams ahead of their clash against Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 on Wednesday.

Mngqithi is optimistic about having the club’s number one goalkeeper, Williams, back before the conclusion of the MTN8.

Williams has been struggling with a shoulder injury and missed the Tshwane giants’ recent pre-season tour to Austria.

The Bafana Bafana number one was also missing during the MTN8 quarter-final clash against Polokwane City FC about two weeks ago. Another player who has been missing for Sundowns due to an injury is new signing Kegan Johannes.

During a press conference on Monday ahead of their first-leg semi-final clash against Stellenbosch FC at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, Mngqithi revealed that Johannes will miss the game while stating that Williams is set to resume ‘full training with the Mamelodi Sundowns squad.

“With regard to Kegan Johannes, he is still out for this match because he came just after he had done an operation with SuperSport [United],” said Mngqithi.

“So he is very close; he is beginning to train on the pitch now. We are hoping that probably in the next few weeks, he will start competitive training.”

“Ronwen is also very close. He is now of the physios; he is now with our biokinetics. It’s just a matter of time before he comes [back] for full training. We are hoping that probably if God is with us in the second round of the semi-final, maybe he might be there,” added Manqoba Mngqithi.

With Williams sidelined, veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango took over between the sticks for Sundowns in their opening match of the 2024/25 season against PLK City.

But Onyango is suspended for the ‘Stellies’ clash. When Sundowns face Stellenbosch FC, Reyaad Pieterse or Jody February will be in goal.
