Lucky Baloyi opens up on his Polokwane City exit

Newly-signed Black Leopards midfielder Lucky Baloyi has revealed the reasons behind his departure from his former club, Polokwane City FC.

Baloyi spent two seasons at ‘Rise and Shine’ but was let go at the end of last season.

The 33-year-old was part of the squad when Polokwane gained promotion back to the Premiership. With players such as Given Mashikinya, Baloyi parted ways with the Limpopo side.

The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder says he has no hard feelings over his departure at Polokwane City and acknowledged that it’s just part of football.

“I left the club because my contract came to an end, and they just told me that they can’t renew it,” he told FARPost. “So that was it. No hard feelings or whatever. That’s how it is in this game. So my contract ended, and I left the team.”

Having started his professional career at Chiefs in 2010, Baloyi did not play in his home province until his move to Polokwane. He says once the opportunity came, he never thought twice.

“This is my career and part of my job. So I can’t even feel like there is something wrong because that’s how it works as soccer players,” the Mokopane-born player said.

“Tomorrow, you are here, and the next day you are not. As I said, I have never been around home since I started playing professional football. So imagine, every club that I have played for was away.”

Baloyi was part of the Leopards side that travelled to Highbury FC in their first match of the 2024/25 season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship on Friday. They played to a 1-1 draw, and Baloyi came on in the last five minutes of the match.

Leopards will now shift their focus to the next game at home to Leruma United in the coming weekend.
