Stellenbosch bolster defence by signing Brian Onyango

Betway Premiership side Stellenbosch FC have continued bolstering their squad ahead of the 2024/25 season by signing Brian Onyango.

Onyango joins the Cape Winelands side as a free agent. He was unattached after his contract expired in June when Mamelodi Sundowns released him.

The Kenyan international was previously linked with a move to another Tshwane side, SuperSport United. However, the deal didn’t materialise.

The 30-year-old may be a perfect replacement for centre-back Ismail Toure, who is linked with a move away from the club.

Other signings that have joined the club include Omega Mdaka, Lehlohonolo Mojela and Sanele Barns. ‘The Stellies’ have also lost some key players like Iqraam Rayners and Deono van Rooyen. In addition, Stellenbosch also parted ways with Qobolwakhe Sibande, Nhlanhla Mgaga and Salifu Colley.

For Onyango, getting into the starting line-up at his new club won’t be a walk in the park. The Cape Town outfit has other talented centre-backs who have been displaying great, consistent performances each time they play. These defenders include Thabo Moloisane, Athenkosi Mcaba, and Liam de Kock.

BRIAN ONYANGO SIGNS FOR STELLENBOSCH FC

Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie believes Onyango will be a great addition to the team and help in domestic and continental competitions. In addition, Onyango will don the number 2 jersey at the club.

“Brian is a player who has enjoyed great success during his career and we are looking forward to adding his experience and winning mentality to our squad,” said Rob Benadie.

“He has been brought in to bolster our defensive line and we have no doubt that he will make a valuable contribution towards both our domestic and continental ambitions.”

If Onyango is match fit he may make his Stellenbosch debut against his former employers Sundowns. The two teams will face off in the two-legged MTN8 semi-finals.

The first-leg will be played on Wednesday, 27 August at Lucas Moripe Stadium. The return-leg will be played on Sunday, 1 September at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
