Khama Billiat comes out of international football retirement

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns stylish forward Khama Billiat has announced his decision to come out of international football retirement.

Billiat quit the Zimbabwe national team two months before they took part in the 2021 AFCON finals that was hosted by Cameroon.

The 34-year-old made his debut for Zimbabwe in their 1-0 win over Mali in March 2011. That was in a 2012 AFCON qualifier.

In addition, he went on to represent Zimbabwe in over 40 games. He formed a formidable combination with another former Kaizer Chiefs star, Knowledge Musona.

WHAT THE STYLISH FORWARD BILLIAT SAID

Almost three years later, he reconsidered his decision and made himself available to play for ‘The Warriors’.

His decision comes barely a week after new coach Micheal Nees announced the squad for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Further, he has been instantly added to the team by the newly appointed German coach.

“This season has been among the best phases of my football career. I have played on grand stages but, nothing beats expressing myself in front of my people,” said Billiat.

“Everytime I step on the turf, I am motivated to do my best for my team and the thousands who love this sport. I feel I still have something to give Zimbabwean football, locally and internationally.

“I have been reflecting deeply and I am convinced there is one chapter which remains unfinished between Khama Billiat and the Zimbabwe national football team.

“So I have reconsidered my decision to retire and would love to represent my country one more time.

“I will continue to work hard on the field and hopefully help the nation in a positive way; I love my country and stand ready to serve if afforded a chance. In God we trust,”

ZIMBABWE FACES KENYA AND CAMEROON

The Warriors are set to take on Kenya and Cameroon in the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Both matches are set to be played in Uganda, as Zimbabwe does not have a CAF-approved stadium to host international matches. Moreso, they recently suffered two defeats at the hands of Lesotho and Bafana Bafana in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Hopes are now high that Billiat will help the nation save face after the humiliating defeats in the World Cup qualifiers.

In addition, Billiat is currently playing for Yadah FC in Zimbabwe’s Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

Though Yadah are lowly, Billiat has made his presence felt having scored ten goals for the Miracle Boys.
