Mashego identifies two Sundowns players to benefit from Rayners’ signing

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego has identified two players who are set to benefit from Iqraam Rayners’ signing from Stellenbosch FC.

Stellenbosch FC recently confirmed the departure of striker Rayners to Sundowns. The transfer was finalised after Sundowns exercised a buy-out clause in Rayners’ contract, securing his move to the reigning DStv Premiership champions.

Rayners’ arrival at Sundowns marks the club’s fifth significant signing during the current transfer window as they continue to strengthen their squad for both domestic and continental competitions.

Already, the Tshwane giants have acquired the services of attackers Kobamelo Kodisang and Arthur de Oliviera Sales. Masandawana have also strengthened their defence by signing Kegan Johannes and Asekho Tiwani.

Last season, the Bafana Bafana international had a good campaign with ‘The Stellies. Rayners racked up 17 goals and grabbed eight assists in 39 matches in all competitions.

In addition, the 28-year-old helped the Western Cape-based side win the Carling Knockout Cup and finish the league season in third place to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

‘Mahoota’ approves Sundowns triggering Rayners’ buy-out clause stating that they really needed a striker. He further believes Rayners is an excellent addition to the squad and will provide healthy competition to Peter Shalulile and Arthur de Oliviera Sales.

Shalulile netted 15 goals and registered four assists in 39 outings last season. On the other hand, Sales scored 10 goals and provided three assists last campaign for Belgium’s second-tier side Lommel SK.

“It’s a good signing for Mamelodi Sundowns, top quality striker even in our national team. It’s a good buy, and it’s good for Iqraam as well. It shows that Sundowns needed a striker,” Mashego told FARPost.

“He got the edge; he’s where he needs to grow and become more competitive. He has the speed and eye for goals.

“I don’t want to get into the dynamics of how Sundowns need to play, but Iqraam being there, I think it’s also good for Peter Shalulile and Arthur de Oliviera Sales.

“Now there will be competition, whether they play together or if another one will be on the bench waiting for his opportunity to play.”
